I shot some editorial style portraits on location with members of Question the Mark band. I really wanted to experiment and shoot these style of images but in a different lighter environment. It is not my normal go to preference and I don’t think it was particularly suited to me or the project.

I decided to shoot more portraits with the editorial Spencer Murphy inspired approach as I’m finding the results very positive. I wanted to look at changing the environment up. I’ve used peoples homes and outdoor in the street by music venues. I wanted to take more control and place them areas I consider to by more alone. I wanted to emphasise the subject and also the words choose to mix in with it I feel would work better in a less urban street area. In urban street areas ( in well lit ones) at least there is a lot of signage and text which would distract from the intended meaning.

I’m finding the results quite satisfying, I do think that the work that I shoot in the night is a lot more suitable to the feeling I want to convey with the message. I am also weary of pigeon holing the viewing into a specific reading but I definitely think the darker images work better. I need to start looking at adding text into the images.

I really liked the performative aspect of being in a quiet place. Working with people not used to working with a professional photographer puts them in a different state I feel. In the earlier modules I was looking at my role as a photographer and becoming an equal sharing that power of the image maker, I still agree with it but I also like the strangeness that comes with that initial phase of having the camera out and a non model being asked to do something.

I’ll be developing these images with text and for that reason I’ve left space in the frame to work with it. As stand alone images I don’t like them as much as the darker images I aim to shoot. I do feel the wood shoot was better.
